What should I wear for my headshots?

I recently had a client ask me this question and I realized I needed a blog post for reference for ALL my clients because there are a few factors to consider in your selection.

What is your business?

I personally think headshots should represent the best version of you and who you are in your business.

For example, you mostly wear jeans & a t-shirt. Cool! We should do a few that capture you like this but I would also suggest that you bring a blazer, cardigan or some accessory that elevates your look one step above your normal everyday wardrobe.

COLORS

I like to base what color you wear on three categories:

Business branding/ logo colors

Background ie Nature, Urban, Interior, or solid color backdrop

Your type of business

For example, you are a realtor & we are photographing you onsite at one of your properties. I would recommend dressing up and wearing more bold colors or neutral but patterned wardrobe since most properties are more neutral and we want you to pop in the image and the property is highlighted in the background.

Let’s say you want a simple gray or black background, I would recommend not wearing the same color as your background. However, tone on tone is beautiful if you are in a creative field like architect, artist, writer or that vibe speaks to you.

Maybe you are an artisit who uses bold color in your work. We should align your photo shoot with your brand and it should be bold & vibrant both with backdrop and clothing selections.

You will notice each of these look slightly different based on the individual, their business & their branding.

GROUP HEADSHOTS

How do these concepts apply for team or company headshots?

This depends on your brand & how much consistency you want within your company. I do think the consistency of your employees headshots gives a sense of professionalism, organization & stability thus giving your clients confidence in your company without much effort.

Traditionally, a company will provide a gray or blue backdrop and you arrive in your Sunday best. And while this is great for some companies, most companies don’t need or want such a traditional look. It doesn’t suit them, their business, or their clients.

My advice is to do a round of images where everyone is dressed as similar as possible is same color shirt or in uniform. And then in round 2, have a four to six coordinated colors that the group can mix or match that also align with the brand colors and the backdrop. As your photographer, I’m happy to pull this together to help support you & your company.
